Our environmental responsibility

“Our vision can be summed up in three words: making travel simpler. We want to deliver integrated transport, environmentally sustainable transport, value for money transport In addition, we are looking to educate people about the benefits of using public transport and explain how they can play their role in reducing climate change by changing their travel habits”. (Richard Bowker: CEO, National Express Group)

As a leading provider of transport services, National Express Group takes its environmental responsibility very seriously. In 2006 in the UK, passengers travelling on National Express services saved sufficient greenhouse gas emissions to provide all the energy to all the homes in a city of 150,000 people*.

Some examples to illustrate this commitment are:

  • Spanish business, Alsa, has started a biodiesel trial with its buses. The results are pleasing and the trial will be extended to its long distance coaches.
  • In 2005, we became the first public transport operator to achieve the Diamond Award in BAA’s “Clean Vehicle” programme.
  • Hazardous waste is inevitably produced in our maintenance operations and, by weight, approximately 90% is recycled.

National Express’s Carbon Club

National Express plans to introduce a “Carbon Club” travel incentive scheme that will encourage repeat travel on public transport rewarding individual customers for making choices that are more environmentally sustainable

As part of this initiative, Dot2Dot will publish its own “Carbon Calculator”. We will supply this data as a matter of course to our major accounts.

We will update this web site with further information on the Carbon Club and on the environmental performance of Dot2Dot. Currently, for the individual, sharing a Dot2Dot single ride with three people as compared with using a taxi will more than halve their carbon emissions for that journey.
